Allergy Elimination (NAET)

Say Goodbye to IllnessNAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique) is a non-invasive, drug free solution to eliminate allergies and sensitivities using a combination of testing and treatment procedures from acupuncture/acupressure, chiropractic, nutritional and kinesiological disciplines of medicine.

It is highly recommended that you read the book, Say Goodbye to Illness (author: Devi Nambudripad) in order to have a better understanding of what the treatment entails. The book is available on amazon and in several bookstores (including the NutriCentre)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is NAET?

NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique) is a revolutionary technique developed by Dr. Devi Nambudripad in the early 1980s. It combines principles and elements from Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture/acupressure, chiropractic and kinesiology (Muscle Responsive Testing) to clear allergic reactions by reprogramming the body and brain.

The technique is non-invasive and painless; it involves using muscle responsive testing to identify allergens (NAET practitioners can also use conventional blood tests, skin prick tests, ELISA, RAST, IgA/G tests to identify allergens; however, these are not necessary as muscle testing is used to confirm laboratory findings). This is followed by the treatment of a specific allergen by stimulating the spinal nerves and key acupressure points, while holding the allergen (usually in a glass vial), to retrain the immune system and brain to no longer react to the particular allergen. To the patient this feels like getting a back massage around the vertebrae. There is a crucial avoidance period (usually 25 hours) following the treatment to complete the reprogramming. The patient is then checked (usually within a few days of treatment) to ensure they have successfully passed the treatment and are no longer reactive to that particular allergen. Once patients have successfully cleared treatments they no longer react to those particular allergens.

Dr. Devi Nambudripad is a qualified chiropractor, acupuncturist and MD and has dedicated much of her life to finding a way to eliminate her own allergies and ailments. She generously has shared her discoveries with thousands of NAET practitioners worldwide. You can read her extraordinary story (along with dozens of other case studies and testimonials) in the book, Say Goodbye to Illness. You can also find out more on www.NAET.com.

What exactly is an allergy?

There is much debate in the medical community over the definition of allergy. Dr. Devi uses a very broad definition for the term allergy as it relates to NAET.

An allergy is a condition of unusual sensitivity of one individual towards one or more substances from one's living environment which may be harmless or even beneficial to a majority of other individuals. [It] is an energy imbalance between the electromagnetic energy of the person and the substance causing unpleasant physical, physiological and/or psychological reactions in the person's body.

Some common allergens include:

Inhalants
pollens, perfumes, dust, formaldehyde, weeds, flowers, grasses, molds
Ingestants
foods, food additives, drinks, medications, vitamins, minerals
Infectants
viruses, bacteria, parasites
Injectants
insect bites, stings, immunizations, injectable drugs
Contactants
fabrics, chemicals, cosmetics, metals, furniture, building materials
Physical agents
heat, cold, humidity, fog, damp, wind, dryness, sunlight, moonlight, sounds
Genetic factors
inherited illnesses or tendency from parents/grandparents etc.
Emotional factors
memories, traumas, negative belief patterns, psychological factors

How do I know if I have allergies?

If you experience uncomfortable or unusual physical, physiological or emotional symptoms in the presence of any of the above listed items (see common allergens), you can suspect an allergy.

Common symptoms of an allergic reaction can range from mild to severe itching, rashes, hives or swellings anywhere in the body, headaches, palpitations, breathing difficulties, coughing, throat swelling/irritation, irregular heart rate/pulse, nausea, bowel changes (constipation, diarrhoea), digestive discomfort (bloating, wind, heartburn), dizziness, fainting, aches and pains, heat, chills, mood swings, irritability, fatigue, brain fog, skin irritations, acne, weight gain and many more. Undoubtedly, there are many undiagnosed allergies hiding behind a variety of health problems and diseases.

Do you treat sensitivities and intolerances?

Yes, as described above, the term allergy is used in a broad sense for NAET and includes sensitivities and intolerances.

Is there a particular order in which allergens are treated?

Yes, through decades of treating patients, Dr. Devi has found that there are 15 basic allergens that are crucial to the foundation of a healthy immune system and body/brain function. She has found that these basics are key treatments required by all patients to ensure successful treatment of further allergens and in some cases they reduce the number of treatments required. Many of these are common allergens for ‘allergic' patients. This is explained in detail in the book, Say Goodbye to Illness. Once the basics have been checked and treated, then allergens are treated according to the health goals of the patient.

It is sometimes frustrating to patients to have to do the basic treatments before getting to the known allergen (e.g. cat, pollen etc.). Some NAET practitioners may be tempted to cut corners; however, this is a disservice to the integrity of NAET and to the patient. Dr. Devi has found that when patients do not complete the basics, they often require more treatments to pass specific allergens, and they run the risk of ‘slipping' treatments. As a practitioner I am a purist when it comes to NAET, I follow the protocol the way Dr. Devi teaches it, and I don't deviate or cut corners. I believe this is in the best interest of the patient.

By way of illustration, a patient came to NAET wanting help with what he suspected was hay fever; he was hesitant to go through the necessary basic treatments before getting to pollen. After being treated for the 4th basic (Vitamin C Mix), all his hay fever symptoms subsided and he no longer required the treatment for pollen mix. This is not always the case; however, the basics can eliminate the need for additional future treatments.

What can I expect during my first consultation?

The initial visit runs just over 1 hour and includes a brief overview of NAET, an introduction to the patient guide book, a detailed case history intake, a patient information consent form signature, followed by the first treatment in the basics (BBF). The first basic treatment, BBF, is a good introduction to NAET as it has no avoidance after the treatment (whereas the others often require 25 hrs of avoidance) and it opens up the energy communication channels in the body, making subsequent testing and treatments more effective.

Dr. Devi requires all NAET patients to read and sign the patient information form (pdf). It includes information on how to ensure you get the most out of your NAET treatments.

How many allergens do you address/treat in each visit?

Generally the body can only handle one allergy treatment per visit; however, it is typical to do a boosting treatment technique before treating the specific allergen for that visit. Boosting techniques are used to strengthen and anchor previous treatments.

How do you know if an allergen has been successfully eliminated?

The first step is to muscle test and check that you have passed an allergy treatment on all levels and are ready to come into contact with that particular allergen. Ultimately you will know when you test it out by coming into contact with the previous allergen and remain symptom-free.

How many treatments will it take to eliminate my allergies?

This varies depending on your symptoms, health picture, inherited allergens and health goals. Some patients only require the basic 15 treatments, while others can require many more. In the book, Say Goodbye to Illness, Dr. Devi has included several case studies that offer examples of the number of treatments required for that individual to regain health. In my own practice, I have observed a wide range -- with patients who have experienced relief from symptoms after completing just a few of the basics, while others require regular treatments (usually twice weekly) for 1-2 years. This is something that can be discussed during your initial consultation.

Do you treat infants?

Yes, NAET is safe and effective for people of all ages. In the case of infants and small children, we treat through a surrogate (usually one of the parents).

Is NAET safe during pregnancy?

Yes, NAET during pregnancy is particularly good as the treatment goes to both the mother and baby. You are essentially getting 2 for the price of 1!

Do you treat pets or animals?

Although NAET works well on animals I do not offer this in my clinic due to clinic restrictions; however, I would be happy to refer you to other NAET practitioners who do offer NAET treatments for pets/animals.

Will NAET interfere with any of my other treatments or medications?

No, NAET can be done alongside any other treatments. You are encouraged to continue with any prescribed treatment protocol from other health care practitioners, although you should be monitored carefully throughout as medication doses often need to be adjusted as your health improves.
